Building Heavy Duty Outdoor Clothesline Poles

Today I’m going to tell you how to build outdoor clothesline poles.

A dryer is one of the biggest energy hogs in your house.  And making a set of these poles is relatively simple.

Normally, you see two big “T”s  in an old farm yard consisting of two pieces of old pipe welded together.  I am guessing that many of my friends out there don’t have access to a welder.  My dad made me a set of clothesline posts that he put together using threaded pipe and fittings.  You can buy this at any hardware store.  It is a bit more expensive, but it has advantages.

First, it doesn’t require a welder.  Second, you can buy all the pieces, and store it in a labeled box until you want it.  You don’t have to have assembled posts in your yard now.  But you will have everything you need, if an emergency should strike.

To build this pair of posts you will need:

4 – 2′ sections of 1″ pipe (for cross arms)

2 – 1″ T’ s (for putting cross arms together)

8 – 1″ eyebolts  with matching nylocks (for holding the line)

2 – 1″ upright posts

4  – lengths of clothes line

2 – 1’+ lengths of 3″ flat strap metal ( optional)

  1. This is a great idea, I like to hang cloths out on the line anyway to make them smell fresher. Always hang the bed things out when they get washed. My tree that had the line on it came down last year and I have not put one up yet.
Can you put a small base for this cloths line in the ground to screw it into when needed and take it down to run a mower over it when you do not need a line. This would make for a lot better looking back yard when no clothes line is needed. We did use ours for a badminton net when others were over before.

    • You could certainly get a female collar, with a 1 foot piece of pipe screwed to the bottom. You could set the pipe and collar into the cement, with a plug screwed into the threads to prevent cement from bunging up the threads.Make sure the top of the collar is flush with the top of the cement. After the cement is totally set, you can unscrew the cap and thread the poles in to use or pull them out, put the plug in the hole and go on with mowing. I am actually considering getting a shorter post and putting a bird bath on it when not in use.

  2. What a great idea! We were just talking about putting a clothes line up on our off grid property. I don’t like using a dryer and often hang my laundry over the rail on the sundeck, but this is a much better way to go.
