Do You have Solar Emergency Light?

So you’ve been thinking that you need an alternative lighting source in your home in an emergency situation.

You are right to consider your options.  In years past, emergency lighting was candles and oil lamps.  I have both.  I love and recommend both…BUT technology has advanced.  Now solar emergency lighting is a safe supplement to your supplies.  Everyone has some little solar lights in the yard, right?  You can even buy  cute ones at Harbor Freight and sometimes even Dollar Tree.  I have a bunch of them scattered around for path lighting and ambiance.

BUT…

Did you ever consider them as emergency lighting?  They require no fuel or batteries. They are safe around kids.  They are fairly break resistant.  They are reasonably priced.   And you can buy ones that are easily portable.  Now I know that you are not going to use a solar dragonfly light on a 2′ stick as a flashlight.

But I have a bucket of sand that is my charging station.  I have small candle style lights along my path.  In an emergency situation, I can grab the lights, stick them in the bucket and I have light at will for years with no source of fuel.  Most of these lights have on/ off switches. The ones I have in my yard have lasted between 2 and 6 years, depending on this year’s weather conditions.  I also keep a couple in the closet that still have the tabs on the batteries, so they will be new if I need them.

I am leaning toward solar emergency lighting more and more.  If I can have clean quiet light that has no smell and can be extinguished quickly, that is the light for me.

And for those security minded, all those cute little glowy eyed yard frogs can be re positioned as perimeter lighting, in the event of an emergency.  Just a thought…
